Horizon City Lots | How Do I Get Rid Of This Land?

Every Spring, I, and many of my counterparts in real estate in El Paso receive telephone calls from folks all around the country.  The calls usually start like this:

“Hello, my name is __________________, and my dad purchased a lot in Horizon back in the 70’s (or 80’s).  I just received my Notice of Value from the El Paso Central Appraisal district and I want to see if this lot has any value or if my dad was scammed”

Another version of the call goes like this:

“Hello, my name is __________________, and my dad purchased a lot in Horizon back in the 70’s (or 80’s).  I just received a letter in the mail from (name of entity) stating that they can sell the lot but it will cost me $500 ($600, $700, etc.) and I want to see if this lot has any value or if this is a scam.”

No matter how the call begins, it always ends the same.  I will get the Property ID number for the lot/parcel and look it up in the tax records, use a mapping tool to find the lot, and then show the caller online where the lot is, in the middle of ‘no-where’ in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Recently, a caller suggested that I set up a web page to direct people to when they called.  That is why you are reading this. So, if you have a similar story to the ones above, here is the information you are looking for:

Call the Law Offices of Delgado Acosta Spencer Linebarger & Perez, LLP at 915-545-5481 and request a ‘Give Up Letter’.  The person I spoke with (she asked me not to use her name) assured me that anyone who answered the phone would know what this letter is and that they would send you one.  The Law Office will assist you in giving the land to the County of El Paso. I do not know if there are any fees associated with this process.
